What is the best way to control poison ivy?
How do you kill poison ivy?
The scientific name toxicodendron radicans is a plant in the family Anacardiaceae. To most Americans, the common name is "Poison-ivy". It is a usually light green to dark green woody vine that is best known for its ability to cause skin irritation. However, occasionally the leaves can be reddish in color. Urushiol, is an organic oil toxin found on poison ivy that causes an itching sometimes bubbly rash for most people,.
Mature leaves can be shiny. The outer leaves usually have a few "teeth" along the edge, and the surface is smooth. The plant has no thorns. These three characteristics to identify poison ivy are: (1) clusters of three leaves, (2) hairy roots/vine, and (3) lack of thorns.
The reaction caused by poison ivy is an allergic reaction. It is estimated that up to 1/4 of people will have no allergic reaction. Reactions can progress to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is an acute systemic and severe hypersensitivity allergic reaction in humans and other mammals. Anaphylactic shock, the most severe type of anaphylaxis. This can occur from poison ivy as well as from other pests such as scorpions.
Urushiol sticks to the skin upon contact, causing severe itching that develops into reddish or clear colored bumps and blistering. It may be treated with Calamine lotion to relieve discomfort. In really severe cases, fluids can ooze from the blister sores. One effective method of relieving the itching, is applying heat to the areas with hot water or a hair dryer. This causes the area to release histamines, which makes it feel like you're scratching the area.
The oozing fluids from the blisters do NOT spread the infected areas.
The spreading rash indicates that some areas reacted sooner to the urushiol oil than other areas. An untreated rash can last up to four weeks!
Urushiol oil can remain active for several years, so handling dead leaves or vines can still cause a reaction.
